While staying on Siargao Island we spoke to some people who suggested that before leaving the Philippines, we needed to visit Moalboal. Moalboal is a 3 hour bus ride south of Cebu City. Moalboal, is not well geared for the number of dive tourists that it has started to attract. The main “strip” has no vehicle access from one end so access to the other end is either a 800m walk or a 4km drive around. Despite this, the place is still rustic and cheap – and the diving is superb.
Entering the ocean from the beach is shallow for around 40m before the ground drops off like an underwater “wall”, making it a great place to for SCUBA and Freedivers to access good dive sites.
For the past 10 months there have been hundreds of thousands of sardines permanently resident in Moalboal. In addition to the attraction of diving with this huge school of fish, it also attracts other game fish – and Thresher Sharks are often spotted near the sardines.
Here is a video of the afternoon we dived with the sardines.
