Since I started travelling I realized that the times I feel the most content are when I’m settled in a place and have the freedom to move around on my own – not having to depend on taxis, tuk-tuks, buses or trains. Every time I’ve had my own transport, a bike or scooter, I’ve felt unbelievably free. The pinnacle of this freedom was on the five days leading up to Christmas when three of us set off on a five-day scooter trip, from Varkala to the mountains of Munnar in Kerala, India.
The total trip took us through Ranni, Vagamon, Munnar and Kottayam. Over the five days, we rode around 1200 kilometres and spent around 35 hours on the bike, through some of the most beautiful mountain passes, tea plantations and waterfalls in Kerala.
The landscape, vibrant colours and vegetation in the mountains and between the tea plantations was absolutely outstanding and unlike anything, I’ve experienced before.
Earlier into my India trip, I had thought about the idea of travelling across India on a Royal Enfield motorbike, but it was put on hold. After these five days, it is going onto the bucket list and into future travel plans.
Below is a video of our trip.
I hope that you’re having a safe and peaceful festive season.
